FS 740 + drinkable water tanks, Appennini lines (1970)
740 is pulling six tank cars: up to the early Seventies, such trains were usual in the lines crossing the Appennini. Many line inspectors' houses were not provided with drinkable water (!) and some were even difficult to reach from the road network; so, about twice a month, a tank train run along the line to supply drinkable water to each house. For example in Abruzzo, a train with six tanks run on 9th and 24th of each month from Popoli to Sulmona and L'Aquila. The day after, two tanks reached Antrodoco, and the third day, all six wagons came back to Sulmona and Popoli. Tank wagons belong to three different series; the one with three axes is special indeed, as it was the tender from a steam loco of the 670 type, one of the most peculiar groups of Italian steam engines (with front cab, wheel arrangement 2' C, coal stock along the boiler and water stock on a tender). FS E.428 + Foodstuffs Train Foggia-Basel (1965)
The large production of fruit and vegetables of Puglia requires a great number of trains towards Northern markets (or at least required them before most of transport turned towards road trucks...). The E.428 of depot Foggia were typical locos for these trains. Era 3-4 Transparent background |

FS E.626 + freight train (1965)
Finally a set of typical FS freight wagons! Many friends asked for them, and there they are. The classic E.626 is a perfect engine to pull the first "parade" of different models: open and closed, with and without brakeman's cabin, with flat or curve roof, with short or long pitch, with wood or metal body, etc. A special thank to Claudio Vianini: most wagons are based upon his paintings. FS A.691 + Direttissimo (1940)
Some think it was wonderful, some think it was awful. If the streamlined body of 683 was mainly due to the necessity of hiding the Franco-Crosti apparatus, the streamlined body applied to 691.026 in 1939 could be justified only by the aerodynamic benefits, which are generally relevant only at speeds higher than 120 km/h (which was exactly the top speed of all Italian coaches before the war...). But the streamline fashion was a typical aspect of the Thirties, and A.691.026 (A stands for Aerodinamica) can be considered as an interesting consequence of that fashion. And its Direttissimo train is quite fascinating indeed... A.691 painted together with Franco Sartori. Era 2 |

FS 685 + passenger train - furnished wagons (1947)
At the end of the Second World War, some 80% of passenger coaches were destroyed or out of order, together with 60% of locos and 85% of multiple units. Also the electrified lines, that had been a proud for FS before the war, were destroyed at 90%. As the most important thing was to guarantee some sort of transport, the first years after 1945 saw very peculiar trains: among them, one of the symbols of that dramatic period was represented by the freight wagons used for passenger services. They were standard box wagons, furnished with benches and showing the inscription "Adibito a servizio viaggiatori" ("Assigned to passenger service") on their doors. The versatile 685 were often used for such trains, which may include some "true" passenger coaches if available (and it was not a surprise to find someone clinging outside them...). Era 3 |

FS 880 + Short Train (1950)
Reproduced from an FS photo of a "light train" from Rome to the Castelli Romani. Light trains (Treni leggeri) were trains introduced in the Thirties, with a very low number of coaches, thus capable of high speed and acceleration, especially in local services. Although the introduction of light railcars (Littorine) few years later decreased the importance of light trains, these were still used for many years after the war.
