Steam Portfolio is possibly the most fascinating railway book in my collection. It contains some 370 photos by Malcolm Dunnett, Ian Krause, John Vaughan, Leslie Nixon, Roderick Hoyle and Paul Hocquard and shot in the last years before the end of regular steam service in UK (August 5, 1968).
I've searched on the Internet for the names of these photographers, but only few data can be found. So I thought it would be precious to make a short gallery available for younger readers. I've tried to select photos in which the "atmosphere of steam" is more evident.

The second part of the gallery contains pictures from Decline of Steam, by Colin T. Gifford (Ian Allan, 1965); the last part shows what has survived in the present days, with photos by Francesco Dall'Armi taken in Scotland in 2011.

Steam Portfolio, pubblicato dalla celeberrima casa inglese Ian Allan nel 1968, è uno dei libri più affascinanti della mia collezione. Contiene oltre 370 fotografie, scattate da Malcolm Dunnett, Ian Krause, John Vaughan, Leslie Nixon, Roderick Hoyle e Paul Hocquard, negli ultimissimi anni prima della scomparsa del vapore regolare in Gran Bretagna (5 agosto 1968).
Ho provato a cercare i nomi di questi fotografi su Internet ma vi ho trovato solo scarne informazioni: credo possa essere utile riproporre alcuni di questi bellissimi scatti, selezionando quelli in cui più si respira l'atmosfera del vapore, e un "sapore" tutto British che mi auguro appassionerà anche i lettori più giovani.

Il racconto prosegue poi con Decline of Steam, di Colin T. Gifford (Ian Allan, 1965), un'altra pietra miliare tra i libri inglesi degli anni '60.
Infine ho accostato a queste foto storiche anche dieci scatti del presente, da un recente viaggio di Francesco Dall'Armi in Scozia: pur in un mondo abissalmente differente, queste immagini moderne sembrano ancora testimoniare quell'epico e affascinante passato.
